General Overview: Where to stay in Barcelona
For the amount that it has to offer, Barcelona is reasonably compact compared to other cities such as London and even Madrid. Smaller is sweeter! You can get round pretty easily on foot, and taxis are great value. There´s also an excellent Metro system that won´t cost you the earth, especially if you go for a multiple journey ticket, or T-10. Here´s a quick look through the main areas of the city to help you to decide where to stay. The Garden Flat is in the Eixample district.

Eixample
This upmarket area, which translates from the Catalan word for “extension” and pronounced "ay-zham-pla" is the fruit of Barcelona’s 19th century cultural and industrial boom. Made up of wide streets stretching inland from the Old Town, Eixample is now the heart and soul of the City. If you want to sample the restaurants, shops and funky bars of Barcelona, and stay in a high ceilinged Modernista flat close to the business district and culture hot spots, then head for Eixample. Pretty much every every Barcelona architectural gem from the turn of the 20th century is located here. Eixample is often split into Eixample Esquerra and Eixample Dret (Eixample Left and Eixample Right) depending on which side of Passeig de Gracia you are talking about. The Garden Flat is in Esquerra de l´Eixample (which we think is the better side for restaurants, bars and shops- but then we would, wouldn´t we).

Ciutat Vella or "Old Town"
Running from Plaça de Catalunya down to Port Vell ("old port") is the famous Las Ramblas. This is the heart of the Ciutat Vella or Bari Gotic ("Gothic Quarter"). The Gothic Quarter is all medieval architecture and narrow, winding streets. This is where you will find Barcelona's cathedral, La Seu. Las Ramblas is something you ought to visit while you are here though it’s packed with tourists. But then it´s easy to wander off and explore the surrounding area. The Ciutat Vella is a lively area full of bars, restaurants and some beautiful medieval buildings. If you are looking for nightlife into the wee hours, then head for here. You´ll also find some quiet corners amid the hustle and bustle.

El Born and La Ribera
To the north east of the Barri Gòtic is El Born: Barcelona's SoHo, with art galleries, unusual shops and funky bars and restaurants. Head here for the Picasso Museum, the Zoo and Ciutadella, one of the city's biggest green spaces.
This is the upmarket end of medieval Barcelona, and gets its name from the main thoroughfare, Passeig del Born. Flats around here tend to be on the smaller size, but with so much to explore, you won´t be spending much time inside.

Port Vell & Barceloneta
This is probably the part of Barcelona that enjoyed the biggest overhaul around the 1992 Olympic Games. Port Vell used to be Barcelona's old port, but is now a luxury yacht marina with an aquarium and shopping center. Barceloneta is the old fishing quarter and still retains its charm: it is flanked by the main beach, which has been tastefully developed with some with beach-side bars or “xiringuitos” and some top seafood restaurants. If you like your seafood, we recommend you stay here.

El Raval
This is the former red-light zone which is rapidly becoming the centre if all things hip and bohemian in Barcelona. You´ll find the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (Museum of Modern Art) and the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona here. If you like an edgier, more alternative scene, then head here. Prices are lower too.

Gracia
Gracia is at the top of Passeig de Gracia (Eixample´s main thoroughfare) : once upon a time a village in its own right, it was connected to the main city when Eixample was built during the Modernista period. You´ll find narrow streets, lively plaças, bars and restaurants and it´s home to Parc Güell, Gaudí's incredible park "sculpture". Gracia holds Barcelona´s most famous and lively festa or fiesta.
